Rethinking Change: Egypt’s Western Desert Oases in Late Antiquity

Bringing together leading international specialists in archaeology, ancient history, papyrology, ceramic studies, and related disciplines, this interdisciplinary round table explores the history of Egypt's Western Desert oases during Late Antiquity (mid-4th–mid-7th centuries CE). By fostering dialogue across different fields of expertise, the event aims to reassess the profound transformations that shaped the communities that lived in the oases during the three centuries before the Islamic conquest of Egypt. Through new evidence and interdisciplinary perspectives, the round table seeks to contribute to a more integrated understanding of the Western Desert as a dynamic and interconnected region on the edge of the Late Antique Mediterranean and Saharan worlds.

The event is organised within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie-funded project RISE – Relations and Identities in a Saharan Environment (late third–tenth century CE DOI 10.3030/101210173) hosted by Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne.

Organised by:

  • Nicoletta De Troia, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow (Paris 1, ArScAn UMR 7041)
  • Clementina Caputo, Junior Researcher – RTDa (Politecnico di Milano)
  • Paul Kucera, Senior Archaeologist (Dr Vincent Clark Archaeology & Heritage) and Adjunct Research Associate (University of Groningen)

The round table will take place in person in Paris, with the option to attend remotely via Zoom Webinar. Online participation is free of charge, but advance registration is required.
