M2 Financial Economics
· Director : Pr. Jean-Bernard Chatelain, maximal number of 25 students plus students on break between M1 and M2 (Césure).
· Description: Financial Economics master is a quantitative finance and monetary economics master diploma with courses fully in English including a master thesis including quantitative research counting for 12 ECTS over 60 ECTS for the full diploma.
· Master thesis: A three page proposal for a research master thesis topic including at least of a few recent research paper is taken into account for application. This is a distinctive component of Financial Economics and Empirical Finance masters. The master thesis is an orginal piece of work by the student, doing empirical research using applied econometrics in the field of money, banking and finance.The master thesis is supervised by one professor with intermediate seminars and final thesis presentation in front of the supervisor and a second professor in the last week of may.
· Courses: 306 hours of teaching between september and march with 180 hours during the first term and 126 hours during second term. The extra time during the second term is devoted to the master thesis. The master ends by the final presentation of the master thesis in the last week of may. · Links with other masters: Around 50% of courses are shared with the master "Empirical Finance". "Empirical finance" includes slightly more courses in market finance than "Financial Economics" which includes slightly more courses in monetary economics, corporate finance and banking. In both diplomas, master thesis can deal with monetary economics, banking, corporate finance and market finance. A 36 hours course is shared with the master APE of Paris School of Economics. An 18 hours course is shared with ESCP-EAP business school.
· Training period: from 1st of june to 30th of november. It is highly recommended but not compulsory to receive the diploma.
· Job opportunities: The majority of students have job opportunities with banks, insurance companies and central banks in fields of asset and risk management, corporate and market finance. · Ph.D opportunities: A proportion of students (4/15) go on with a PhD in other universities or in Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne university if they have a PhD grant. Following an additional PhD track is an option on the second semester, which is not compulsory in order to apply for a PhD grant. Information on the doctoral school are available on Paris 1 website.
· Ph.D. grants opportunities: (1) Application including a PhD proposal for Paris 1 grants from the doctoral school are around 15th of june. Presentation and selection by the jury of the doctoral school around 1st of july. PhD grants ("contrat doctoraux") start at the beginning of the academic year for 3 years and may imply teaching at the university. (2) PhD CIFRE grants between Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne and a financial institution or Banque de France may be possible upon proposal from the staff of these institutions. Application of CIFRE grant to the national agency for research and technology (ANRT) implies a 6 to 12 month delay before being financed by the PhD grant. (3) Foreign PhD grants are an option for foreign students studying in Paris 1. (4) other grants may appear, available for studying in Paris 1 or in other French or foreign universities.
