IMPORTANT NOTICE

In September 2008, the Diplôme Universitaire « Law in Europe » is turning into a Master 2 professional degree in « International and European Business Law », branch « Law in Europe ».

The University degree created by Professor Mireille Delmas-Marty is thus replaced by a State degree.

This programme receives principally Chinese students and researchers who obtained a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council or the French Embassy in Beijing.

It may receive, in September 2008, a few other Chinese students who would be holders of a Master 1 degree in French law. Applications must be sent before September 15th, 2008 to Professor François Gaudu, 12, place du Panthéon, 75005 Paris (gaudu@univ-paris1.fr).

In November 2004 Mr Zeng Xianyi, vice-chancellor of the very prestigious People's University of China Law School (in Beijing), came to France to ask our University to organise postgraduate tuition specifically aimed at providing Chinese students with a legal education which could favourably compete with the training on offer at U.S. universities.

He was welcomed by Mr Jean Kawecki, administrative head of International Relations, representing the Vice-Chancellor of our University, and by Professor Mireille Delmas-Marty, who immediately created such a course, provided on a biennial basis, and under the title "The Law in Europe". Mr Pierre Truche, former Premier Président of the Cour de cassation, and Mr Paul Bouchet, Conseiller d'Etat, lent the support of their institutions to this programme.

The first Chinese students arrived in March 1997, with the second intake following in 1999 ; the third in February 2001 ; the fourth on October 1st 2003, and the fifth on October 1st 2005. The provision of the diploma having become an annual event, the sixth year group arrived at the end of September 2006.

All these Chinese students have always benefited from grants, awarded in 1997 by the European Commission (DG I - Directorate-General External Relations, thanks to the strong support of Mr Francisco de Angelis, Chairman of the Association of European Lawyers and General Director of the Directorate-General for Financial Control), and in 1999 by the French Government. Since 2001, the French Government awards two grants, all the others (between 10 and 15 depending on the years) being offered by the Chinese Government. Additionally, the China Scholarship Council and the French Embassy in China also provide material help of paramount importance to the smooth running of the programme.

Since 2001, the award of a Diplôme Universitaire (D.U. 07 UG, Postgraduate studies) marks the successful conclusion of teaching.

The programme has been successively placed under the scientific responsibility of Professor Mireille Delmas-Marty (1997-2002), Professor Yves Daudet, Vice-Chancellor of the University (2002-2004), and Professor François Gaudu (since 2004). Course coordinator responsibilities have successively been held by Mrs Antoinette Perrodet (1997-1998), Mrs Leïla Choukroune (1999-2000), Mrs Valentine Buck (2001-2002), Mr Didier Boden (2002-2007) and Mrs Haiying Wang-Foucher (since 2007). In 2006 a doctoral seminar and a practical seminar on European law have been created, whose coordination has been entrusted to Ms Aurélie Tardieu (2006-2007), and to Mrs Haiying Wang-Foucher (since 2007).
