Research - Joint Research Unit "Développement et Sociétés"

Interdisciplinary by definition, the peculiarity of development studies lies in the desire to think together of the processes of economic growth and of social and urban change in a world expressing tendencies towards the convergence or diversification of nation-states.

The constant reference to a global and prospective approach to social dynamics constitutes the fundamental background of reflections and formations. This constitutive dimension of development studies thus contributes to the understanding of social change, modernity, the future of societies and the meaning to be given to them: "there are currently no countries under -developed; There are countries that are under-analyzed, "Jacques Berque, in 1962 (Social Sciences and Decolonization, Revue Tiers Monde, n ° 9-10, Paris, PUF, p. The challenge of independent and productive social and human sciences research remains critical in many countries.

In addition to the training of development specialists, the IEDES contributes to research on the development processes of the countries of the South within the Joint Research Unit (UMR) "Développement et Sociétés".

The Joint Research Unit "Développement et Sociétés", created in 2008, associates researchers from the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and professors-researchers of the Institute for the Study of Economic and Social Development (IEDES) of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The research carried out by this multidisciplinary team focuses on the issues and development processes in the predominantly African, Latin American, Asian and Middle Eastern societies.
