The City of Berkeley

The City of Berkeley is of great historical, academic and architectural interest.

It lies across the Bay from San Francisco, about 20-30 minutes by public transportation. The weather will be cool (10-15 C) and there is a good chance of rain.

Conferences Venues

Bancroft Hotel: Very convenient, right across Bancroft Avenue from the Department and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology.

Alumni House: For both Saturday and Sunday sessions.

Update on Hotels and Accommodations as of December 3rd

NB : Information kindly supplied by Charlie Carroll Chair, TSWG, aided and abetted by friends! In all his calls he discussed room availability for the dates February 17-21 (spanning the conference period with a day in advance and a day after tacked on).

 Faculty Club

This is a very cool venue in the heart of campus - a dark old redwood building built in 1904 on the edge of Strawberry Creek right in the middle of campus.  Currently they have about 5 rooms with a bath at $120 single occupancy $130 double occupancy, and 3 rooms with a shared bath at $120 single occupancy, $130 double occupancy.  The rate includes tax and a continental breakfast.

Women's Faculty Club

Is a members only club, non-members cannot make bookings therefore we would need a member to make a booking or have a department make a booking for us.  If we book 4 or more rooms we could have the rooms held for conference participants at a reduced “conference rate.”   (Their highest regular rate is $140).   They still do have rooms available.

Charlie Carrol could make the reservations if you get in touch with him via email:

Down Town Berkeley Inn

The Down Town Berkeley Inn is in a very convenient location, walking distance to BART and Campus, although it is a rather odd location downtown on a part of a street where there really aren't many other businesses (kind of behind our main library and across the street from our high school).  Best rate they have is $89 per night.

Berkeley YMCA

They are already booked for the month of February.

Bancroft Hotel

This is the venue for our opening Banquet and it is located right across the street from the Anthro Dept.  As of this afternoon they have 21 rooms available.  They offer a  “UC Berkeley Rate” of  $129 per night.  The key words to use when booking the room are “UC Berkeley Rate.”  While one section of the banquet room is wheelchair accessible, none of the guest rooms are wheelchair accessible.  It is a historic building “grandfathered in” avoiding requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Berkeley City Club

It is a beautiful old building with a considerable amount of charm - but best yet, it has an indoor pool!   Currently they have rooms available between the 17th and 21st of February.   Participants could book the rooms at the “UC Berkeley Rate” by calling and telling the receptionist that they are booking at the “UC Berkeley Rate” as participants in the Tourism Imaginaries Conference at UC Berkeley.  The UCB rates are $120 for weekdays and $145 for weekends.  Very Close to Campus

Hotel Shattuck Plaza

They have plenty of single rooms available between the 17th and the 21st of February.  This may be the most convenient hotel in Berkeley as the BART (i.e. train to and from San Francisco International Airport) station is across the street, and the hotel is located down town within easy walking distance to the conference venue on campus.   Conference participants could get a 17% reduction on their best available rate (Currently, this puts the discount around $132. Book early to get the discounted rate confirmed.  Based on availability. Rate can increase as occupancy increases.) To make a reservation online go to: : Go to, enter the dates, click "Book Now", click on "Corporate Rates" and enter the code: uofc10.

Cancel Policy: 24 hours prior to arrival

French Hotel, Shattuck Avenue

A small hotel in the midst of the “Gourmet ghetto” of Berkeley. About 20 minutes walk to the campus venues.

Rooms with Queen-size beds:  $105 per night; University price: $95 a night.

Just say it is for this conference. Some rooms still available.

San Francisco.

Since our conference venue is so close to BART one could conceivably stay on Union Square or near Market Street in San Francisco and take BART over to the conference in the mornings (about 20 minutes ride + 10 minute walk).
